The Purpose of the Institute. The Healing Hands for Haiti Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Institute will serve many conditions and groups of patients, but one disorder  stands out particularly as an unmet need. That is the treatment of acute stroke. Vascular  Diseases may seem to be primarily a problem for those living in highly developed  economies, but in fact the vast majority of stroke victims live in the less developed  countries. Although smoking, obesity, and a diet heavy in saturated fats are significant  factors in stroke as well as heart attack, hypertension and diabetes are the number one and two factors.

Our facility is being designed to care for 20 in patients. If we are able to provide maximum benefit in 10 to 14 days, we would be able to serve 40 to 50 patients per month at our rehab facility. One can see that this is still a fraction of total need.  But as of now no one is meeting this need and thousands are left with disabilities that are greater then they need to be. Finally this facility will serve as an educational center for nursing students, medical students and of course students of the rehabilitation professions.
