Haiti is currently facing political and economic turmoil, but amid the chaos, one often-overlooked crisis is affecting some of the most vulnerable—people with disabilities. According to a recent UN report, Haiti’s ongoing instability is worsening access to essential services, leaving thousands of disabled individuals without the care they need. The crisis has disrupted hospitals, closed clinics, and made mobility even more challenging for those already struggling.
At Healing Hands for Haiti, we are witnessing these challenges firsthand. Despite the unrest, we remain the only operational rehabilitation clinic in Haiti, continuing to serve those in need. Unlike many international NGOs that provide aid for Haitians, we empower Haitians to rebuild their lives through locally led rehabilitation programs. Our clinic ensures that people with disabilities receive prosthetic and orthotic care, physical therapy, and training for independent living.
The Need for Disability-Inclusive Solutions
As the UN emphasizes, people with disabilities are disproportionately affected in times of crisis. Healthcare access, transportation, and economic opportunities vanish, further pushing them into extreme poverty. However, by investing in long-term, locally led rehabilitation services, we’re creating sustainable change. Our Haitian-led teams are on the ground daily, ensuring that those with disabilities are not left behind, even during the most challenging times.
